Bookbinding workshops Autumn 2024
Here are some bookbinding workshops that I am giving this Autumn 2024. These group workshops are suitable for a range of abilities: from beginners and improvers.
1. Coptic Stitch Binding
Where: Graphic Studio Dublin
When: 10am – 4pm, Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th October 2024
What: The Coptic binding method is one of the oldest methods of bookbinding and takes its name from early Christians in Egypt – the Copts – and used from as early as the 2nd century AD. The coptic stitch book has a surprisingly modern look with an exposed spine with chain link stitching. The pages lie completely flat making it a great structure for notebooks, sketchbooks and artist’s books.
In this workshop you will create a beautiful handmade book by folded and sewing signatures into a multi-section hard back book. It will be covered with decorative paper – either from my supply or from paper you have yourself.

2. Japanese Stitch Binding
Where: Graphic Studio Dublin
When: 10am – 4pm, Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th November 2024
What: This workshop will focus on the Japanese Stab stitch bindings. Orginally coming in China, this binding was developed in the 14th century and is considered the most typical Japanese style. The basic stitch ‘Yotsume Toji’ is a four hole binding but this can be built up into a multitude of complex patterns.
In this bookbinding workshop, we will create several soft back books exploring and experimenting with different variations of the stitch. You will then create a beautiful hardback stab stitch book which can be used as a sketchbook, photo album or display book. This will be covered with decorative paper and cloth.
